アメリカや日本の各方面の方々から「日本人の被災者に寄付したいのだが」という申し出をいただい

Katrina/Rita Aid for Japanese (9/30/05)
As I am sure you are well aware, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused huge damages in Louisiana
and Mississippi. While it hasn't been widely reported, there are many hurricane victims of Japanese
descent including at least one casualty. Many lost their houses, all personal properties, and/or
automobiles. In addition, many people lost their jobs and are having a tough time to get it going
because they had to move out of the New Orleans area. Needless to say, there are other expenses in
evacuation and/or moving.
I heard from more than a couple of people that they wanted to help Japanese victims, but we didn't
have any organization to accept their donations. Thus, we decided to establish "Katrina/Rita Aid for
Japanese." While I, Yoshinori Kamo, serve as chairperson, the following board members from the
Baton Rouge area will set the policy and manage the fund.
*Yoshinori Kamo, Chairperson (Director, Baton Rouge Japanese School; Associate Professor of
Sociology, LSU)
*Akiko Kamo, Vice Chairperson (President, Louisiana Association of Teachers of Japanese; Vice
President, Japan-Louisiana Friendship Foundation)
*Osamu Matsumoto (Technical Director, Shintech, Louisiana, LLC)
*Brian Chapman (President, Japan-Louisiana Friendship Foundation, Louisiana Department of
Economic Development)
*Nancy Bourg (President, Japan Club of Baton Rouge)
We will also ask Consul General of New Orleans and other people to serve on the Advisory
Board, and seek cooperation of Consulate General of New Orleans (currently operating in
Houston) in communication with victims and potential donors.
Hurricane Katrina victims of Japanese descent are estimated at 350 in the New Orleans area and
100 in Mississippi. There may be Japanese victims of Hurricane Rita in southwest Louisiana.
We will solicit donations through Japanese media and various networks in the U.S., including
Japanese corporations. All activities of Managing and Advisory Board are on volunteer basis. If
paid work is involved in communications with Japanese victims, we will hire those displaced from
the New Orleans area, paying up to a certain proportion of all money raised to be determined by the
board.
Fund-raising has already started. According to the current plan, we will start sending/e-mailing
damage assessment questionnaires to those who were affected from October, send checks based on
raised funds from January, 2006, and finish the fund-raising around April.
The following two accounts will take donations.
